(1798) Tobago Countermark. Vlack 444, struck on a Birmingham forgery 1749 Sous Marques with a Crowned C in the die. Rarity-2 (per Vlack, likely a bit rarer). Fine, the countermark applied to the obverse of the host coin, the last two digits of the Sous faintly visible at the top. Mottled brown, lightly rough surfaces with a bit of green verdigris at the lower reverse, the Crowned C pseudo-countermark on the host coin bold. From the Robert Vlack collection, purchased privately prior to the sale of his collection (which contained the four examples he used as plate coins for his book); accompanied by his original typed envelope.
