In 1836, command of HMS Terror was given to Captain George Back (1796-1878) for an Arctic expedition to Hudson Bay. The expedition aimed to enter Repulse Bay and send out landing parties to ascertain whether the Boothia Peninsula was an island or a peninsula. The ship was stranded for 118 days on an ice flow. The Royal Museums, Greenwich, UK, stated the Inuit had the hardiness to venture through challenging ice to the ship. The Inuit were given presents, supplied by the government, which included a few brass medals. The Ship survived the ice and sailed back to Ireland where it was fixed. 31mm, 10.7g, holed for suspension, VF. Ex.
