CH 635-10-02-02. 4 July 1865, ABNCo., partially engraved date.  Manuscript signatures are T. Woodside, left, and Jas. Metcalfe, right.  A portrait of the Duke of Wellington is seen at the left, the crest of the bank is superimposed on the Royal Crest in the centre, and a sailor stands at the right. The note register for this bank, not yet published, records only three $1 notes of the partially engraved date variety, and two of them are institutional.  This is therefore the only example available to collectors.  All three recorded notes are in approximately the same condition.  The note offered here is a pleasing VG with minor border roughness as expected for the grade, and there are numerals in ink on the back.  Colours on both sides remain impressively fresh and bright.  Collectors are beginning to pay more attention to notes of the Royal Canadian Bank, and we expect this outstanding and very desirable rarity to set a solid price.
