The Confederation of the Province of Canada was commemorated by a beautiful medal designed by J.S. and A.B. Wyon. Silver, 76.5mm, bearing a distinctive veiled bust of Queen Victoria and the reverse depicts Britannia and the British lion with figures of agriculture, forestry, navigation and mining. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated. Gleaming prooflike fields are joined by lightly frosted devices, remarkable beauty and appeal. The reverse shows a fine die crack at 3:00, between PATRIUS and VIGOR. A seldom offered silver Confederation medal. Originally, 50 were issued, 16 to London Conference delegates, 4 to other delegates, 14 individuals including the Prince of Wales, Premiers of 4 provinces, the Governor General, Colonial Secretary and one placed in the Library of Parliament. Apparently more were issued as late as 1872. This specimen has a die break at 3 p.m. on the reverse. Designed by JS and AB Wyon, there was also one gold and 500 bronze medals. BR 90, UNC. Ex Belzberg.
