1876 Consolidated Bank of Canada $4 - CH 205-10-02a, PMG Very Good 6, brown staining, St. Catharines "C" Overprint, ONLY ONE KNOWN, Overprinted C C in dark blue, the only known example of this overprint on any Consolidated Bank note. The bank was formed by the amalgamation of the City Bank (Montreal) and the Royal Canadian Bank in 1876. It could not weather the depression then under way, and failed in 1879. The notes were redeemed until 7 May 1890, (except for the $10 notes which the bank never issued because of the theft of 4,000 new notes). The scarcity of $4 and $5 notes of this bank is now beginning to be appreciated by collectors. S/N:30990/B.
