Bronze, Silver, and Gold. A complete set of three medals housed in a 1960’s era Capital holder with its original cardboard box (and protective tissue paper). Each is 36mm with plain edges and unsigned. According to Doug Ferguson, writing in the June 1927 issue of The Numismatist, these medals were “distributed to the winner of local competitions in schools for essays on some subject of Canadian history.” Reportedly, 1,840 pieces were struck in bronze, 600 in silver, of which 540 were distributed, plus 81 in 750 fine gold. We believe about a dozen examples may survive in gold.
The group includes: 1.) Bronze. 27.9g. Copper-orange surfaces have mellowed somewhat, but they retain splashes of peach, steel-blue, and magenta colour. The fields are appreciably glossy. 2.) Silver. 30.4g. Ice-blue and lavender patina covers each side. Beautifully preserved with a single minute rim tick above the second E in CONFEDERATION. 3.) 18k Gold. 46.6g. An absolute gem with deep cameo contrast and natural reddish accents. Die polish lines in the fields are as made and should not be confused with hairlines. Extraordinary quality.
