William Lyon Mackenzie King served as Prime Minister of Canada for three non-consecutive terms: 1921–1926, 1926–1930, and 1935–1948. A leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, he was the dominant figure in Canadian politics from the early 1920s through the late 1940s. Struck in 18k gold. 45.8 g, 1.365 AGW, 36 mm. A reported mintage of just 81 pieces was produced in .750 fine gold. This example bears the edge inscription: “Rt. Honble W.L. Mackenzie King C.M.G., Ottawa July 1st 1927.” Prime Minister Mackenzie King introduced the first national observance of Dominion Day (now Canada Day) on July 1, 1927, marking the Diamond Jubilee of Canadian Confederation in 1867. It is believed that only approximately a dozen examples survive in gold today, rendering this medal among the most desirable of the entire series. The present specimen is a superb example, exhibiting only minor contact marks and light hairlines while retaining strong visual appeal with natural reddish-gold accents. Some die-polish lines are visible in the fields, as struck. Overall, a piece of exceptional preservation and eye appeal, and one of clear museum-quality significance. From the Geoffrey Bell Collection.
