Br 568, Weir & Larminie - CH MT-7, Robert Weir’s and William Larminie’s encased 10 cent U.S. postage stamp. These Montreal exchange brokers were the only Canadians to follow the practice adopted during the Civil War of creating small change by encasing stamps of different values in a brass frame with a mica window. The process was created and patented by John Gault of Boston, Mass., whose name and the patent date, Aug. 12, 1862, appear around below on the reverse. There is nothing else quite like this in Canadian numismatics. This example is a good VF, with the mica intact, if lightly scratched, to protect the green Washington portrait stamp. Ex: Jeffrey Hoare Sale, June 1992, lot 1039.
This lot is part of the extensive George H. Thomson Collection.
