Br 689 - CH LC-43A3, Picault’s Sou, plain edge, with collar, struck by the Numismatic and Antiquarian Society of Montreal from dies supposed to have been discovered in the early 1860s, and never circulated. Dr. Pierre-Etienne Picault owned a pharmacy at 42-46 Notre Dame Street, Montreal. Why the dies should have been discovered on his premises has never been explained. In any case, the Numismatic and Antiquarian Society arranged to have examples struck from the dies almost immediately, and carried on the practice intermittently into the 1890s. Examples are known in different metals. This example a dark AU in copper with touches of remaining lustre.
This lot is part of the extensive George H. Thomson Collection.
