Lot of eight pieces. A complete set of these rare post-Confederation tokens struck in copper. According to P.N. Breton (1894), about 20 sets were produced “in commemoration of different kings and other rulers who have reigned during the past fifty years.” Although the tokens were ostensibly struck for the Montreal German Glee Club (Gesangverein Teutonia), it is unknown who made them or why.
This lot includes: BR 598, Leo XIII, 5.23g; BR 599, Wilhelm, 5.87g; BR 600, Wilhelm, 7.47g; BR 601, Wilhelm, 5.47g; BR 602, Kaiser, 5.71g; BR 603, 5.57g; BR 604, Kaiser, 5.77g; BR 605, 5.77g. All beautifully preserved with considerable red colour remaining. Of all the sets and singles we have seen, this one stands head and shoulders above the rest. Quality is unimprovable for the issue.
Ex: Roy Hughes Collection (Jeffrey Hoare Auctions, 2/1995); John Temple Collection (Geoffrey Bell Auctions, 9/2012), lot 673, where it realized $14,400; Michael Joffre Collection.
