Lot of seven pieces. A near-complete set of these rare post-Confederation tokens struck in silver. According to P.N. Breton (1894), about 20 sets were produced “in commemoration of different kings and other rulers who have reigned during the past fifty years.” Although the tokens were ostensibly struck for the Montreal German Glee Club (Gesangverein Teutonia), it is unknown who made them or why. An unknown number of those sets were struck in silver, but we suspect that only three to five of each were minted. This may be the most complete set in silver extant.
This lot includes: BR 599, Wilhelm, BR 600, Wilhelm, ex: Ludger Gravel (1935); BR 601, Wilhelm; BR 602, Kaiser, ex: Ludger Gravel (1935); BR 603, Wilhelm; BR 604, Kaiser, ex: Ludger Gravel (1935); BR 605. All prooflike with moderate toning and razor-sharp definition. Extremely well-preserved and with a pedigree that includes a who’s who of Canadian numismatics.
