Bust & Harp to right - Br 1012, Bust & Harp to right, Courteau 20, BL-36, copper, on a small, perfectly round flan 25.70 mm in diameter, 1.60 mm thick, 7.06 grams, die orientation off 90 degrees clockwise as usual. A few letters of the legend are legible. This is a mysterious token which, on the face of it, might seem to have something in common with the series of evasion halfpence with misleading legends issued in England in the late eighteenth century. However, the legends on this token are completely nonsensical and its specifications quite different from the English issues. It would, therefore, seem to be an imitation of an evasion halfpenny, that is, an imitation of an imitation! A smooth Fine/VG, with the strings of the harp visible across the curls and face of the portrait bust as is usual with this token. Ex: Warren Baker.
This lot is part of the extensive George H. Thomson Collection.
