Obverse: bust of James Watt facing right PRESENTED AT MCGILL UNIVERSITY MONTREAL PRIZE FOR APPLIED SCIENCES. Reverse: Wreath of maple leaves, roses, shamrocks, leeks, and thistles IN MEMORY OF THE BRITISH ASSOCIATION AT MONTREAL 1884. Bronze 45mm, 40.9 grams Medal by Allan Wyon. This medal commemorates the first meeting in North America by the British Association for the Advancement of Science (BAAS) in 1884, largely orchestrated by Nova Scotian, Sir John William Dawson who became its first North American president in 1885. The BAAS conferences started in the UK in 1831, and 1884 was the first time that it was held in Canada. It was to be held in Toronto in 1897 and 1924, as well as Winnipeg in 1909. In Wyon case of issue, there is a note within suggesting this piece was given awarded to Chester Boast. Also known in brass (GBA 1 June 2017 Lot 515) and gold.
