CH PE-1A1, PEI Holey Dollar, 1805 - Spanish eight real pieces were commonly used as currency on Prince Edward Island in the early 1800's. The newly minted Governor found that silver coinage was all being used to purchase goods in Halifax and Saint John and thus leaving a shortage of specie on the Island. In order to keep coinage on the Island, he cleverly had the center (dump) cut out of the eight real pieces valued at 1 shilling and the resulting ring valued at 5 shillings. The original coin was only worth 5 shillings in Halifax and Saint John. These specimens are interesting in that they were emergency money, local tokens, very early Canadian coinage, so collectors in various fields show interest in these fascinating coins.
