Canada Borderline Token.

C'est du Cuivre (Halfpenny). Brass. By Joseph Davis. VG, but the engraver's signature not visible due to the worn state of the token. Obv. Laurel bust facing left, said to represent Napoleon. C'EST DU CUIVRE. Below, ship bearing Union Jack sailing to left. An unusual piece, representing both France and Britain. It prompted Lyman Low to write the following: "The ship, the flag, the inscription, the engraver and Napoleon make it highly probable, in my mind, that it was made for circulation in Canada, where the warmest welcome was extended to everything to a coin up to Victoria's reign." Low made another interesting comment on the token in the Cutting Sale, May, 1898. Bowman adds, "It is probably a pattern struck in the hope of obtaining orders for a quantity from Canada. The writer knows of but two specimens." More are known now, but it is scarce. VG.
