Canadian Countermark - Rouleau countermark on rev. of Essequibo and Demerara stiver, 1813. (M.I. 798, Brunk R-551).

The Rouleau countermarks have always been avidly collected, and I have described three forms of the stamp in Marked Impressions. The evidence seems to guide us towards Quebec City as their origin. The absence of the mark on Quebec pieces actually tends to support the argument for Quebec in my opinion, as defacements of the local coinage would likely have been a problem.
