Canadian Countermark - F.G. SHALLING countermarks: On rev. of Bank of Upper Canada penny, 1857, Br 719 (M.I. 824); on rev. of Bank of Upper Canada penny, 1857, Br 719 (M.I. 825). 2 Pcs.

These two, though duplicates, were obtained from different sources, indicating that the mark may have some legitimacy as an advertising piece. It’s interesting to note that the marks both occur on the reverse in almost the identical spot. One is rather worn, but the other is in near mint state. The U.S. Census of 1880 locates three individuals by the name of Fred. G. Shalling. The first was a machinist in Taunton, Massachusetts, born in 1828; the second was a liquor merchant of New York City, born in 1840; the third was an engraver in New Bedford, Massachusetts, born in 1854. (Marked Impressions).

Note: this lot is part of The Richard Cooper Collection.
