Canadian Countermark - TK countermarks: On obv. of “Tiffin” ½ penny brass counterfeit, 1812, Br 960, C. 17 (M.I. 879, Brunk K-16); on obv. of “Tiffin” ½ penny brass counterfeit, 1812, Br 960, C. 18? (M.I. 880, Brunk K-16); on obv. of “Tiffin” ½ penny copper counterfeit, 1812, Br 960, C. 22, holed. (M.I. 878, Brunk K-16) 3 Pcs.

Various speculations have been made concerning the possible issuer of these marks which I have only seen on early (pre-1840) coppers. My most recent notion is that they may represent small change in a lumber camp, and while not provable it seems to me a more tenable suggestion than those previously discussed.

Note: this lot is part of The Richard Cooper Collection.
