Canadian Countermark

J.M. WILLIAMS & Co. / HAMILTON ONT. on what appears to be a Great Britain penny. The mark is well worn and on a cracked flan. It’s difficult to determine whether it is countermarked or engraved. (M.I. 1008).

The mark represents James Miller Williams, possibly the most important individual to have produced a countermark noted in this collection (Marked Impressions). In Visionaries: Canadian triumphs, Vol. VI of Canada heirloom series, Heirloom Publishing, Williams is described as the father of North America’s petroleum industry. Three sketches of Williams were quoted in full in Marked Impressions.

Note: this lot is part of The Richard Cooper Collection.
