Canadian Countermark

[Pig]. A pig (incused) with PORK in raised letters on body of pig three times on obv. of Quebec Bank penny, 1837, Br 521 (M.I. 1074).

The mark may represent the trade of the issuer of the token, which is similar to the ad for William Masterman, illustrated in Lovell’s Montreal directory, for 1875-76, published by the Lovell Printing and Publishing Co., reproduced on page 784 (see fig. 55). In chapter 39 of Dave Bowers’ Adventures in rare coins, Vol. II, 2002, p. 346, a similar mark is illustrated. (Marked Impressions).
