T. McAVITY/9 WATER STREET. - The second line seems to fail in this stamping, as it is longer than the coin can accommodate. On this example, which is over the rev. of Br. 1004, the 1815 Ship ½ p., only the tops of TER STRE are visible, though the last two letters ET are complete. The A of WATER can be seen vaguely over the edge of the piece, and the last T in STREET is near the edge. This appears to be typical of the mark, as the following example shows as well. (Brunk M-341, see Canada section, M.I. 611). The mark is included under the same Brunk number due to it having the same legend on the two lines. The first and earliest type, in my opinion is the one illustrated in Brunk, and offered as the third of the McAvity pieces. The difference is in the size of the letters on the copper tokens which appear to be later. The firm commenced in 1834, under the proprietorship of Thomas McAvity and continued under four generations for one hundred and twenty-five years.

Note this lot is part of the Richard Cooper Collection.
