The Canadian-Dutch joint set celebrating the Liberation of the Netherland in 1945 offered a unique opportunity for the Royal Canadian Mint to show its technical capabilities to the European market. Having already issued selective plating and circulation colourized coins, for this set the RCM experimented something never done before: photo etched coins. A probably unique trial piece (CH DC-41) struck on a traditional uniface test token piece was produced, exhibiting in the obverse the photo etching of a stock picture of a young girl. With the success of the production of the trial piece, the medallion was produced using the same technique.
