A beaver gnawing at a tree from which a branch holds a scroll inscribed INDUSTRY & PERSEVERANCE; around the rim the legend: BEAVER CLUB INSTITUTED MONTREAL 1785. Rev. Four 40.5mm., 15.83 gm., Integral suspension loop and separate gilt suspension ring with modern blue ribbon. Beaver Club medals are of the utmost rarity, with auction appearances of any example being exceptionally infrequent. Archibald McLellan’s medal was offered by Edward Cogan in April 1871 and is preserved in the Canadian Public Archives. The medal of Henry Mackenzie, likewise handled by Cogan in 1876 and again in 1878, subsequently appeared in the W.W.C. Wilson Collection (1925) and later in the Robert Reford holdings, sold at Jacoby’s, Montreal, in 1971. The 1920 W.H. Hunter Collection included the medal of William McGillivray, now in the Glenbow Museum, having been presented by J. Douglas Ferguson. In total, just five specimens have been traced at auction over the past century and a half, including the present example and a second piece in Geoff’s collection; of these, two are now held in institutional collections. We have included Warren Baker's article online for further information and discussion.
