City Bank on Ribbon Original, Br 526 - Frontview Penny dated 1837 with City Bank on the ribbon, Courteau 88, PC-2A1, straight reverse. As Courteau points out in his The Copper Tokens of the Bank of Montreal (1919) about this token: “... there are almost as many theories as known specimens” (24). After careful study, he arrived at the conclusion that both the obverse and the reverse dies were unique to this token. In other words, it was a regular, if rare issue, which probably appeared a short time before the regular 1842 Frontview pennies. It was struck at the Soho Mint, Birmingham. There seems no good reason to doubt Courteau’s opinion. This lot, at 16.26 grams, is an example of the regular issue in about EF condition.
This lot is part of the extensive George H. Thomson Collection.
