Extremely Rare Banque du Peuple Sideview - Br 525, CH LC-11C, an extremely rare token, said to be fewer than ten examples known. In his Canadian Numismatics in 1886, R.W. McLachlan noted the existence at that time of but one example – in his own collection. It seldom appears at auction. In recent years there have been auction appearances in the June 1990 Jeffrey Hoare sale of the Ross Wilby Collection, lot 1018; the June 1992 Jeffrey Hoare sale, lot 1029 (the present example); the February 1995 Jeffrey Hoare sale of the Roy Hughes Collection, lot 1479; and, the March 1995 Stack’s sale of the James A Stack Sr., Collection, lot 83. The latest auction appearance was of the uncirculated example in the 2013 Stacks Bowers sale of the John J. Ford Jr. Collection, lot 21126, which sold for $22,000 USD. Although this token might seem an oddity, with its side view of the Bank of Montreal on the obverse and the name of the rival Banque du Peuple appearing on the ribbon on the reverse, the existence of specimens with wear proves that it was a circulating token, albeit that only a small number must have been struck. The present example is in VF condition on the obverse, with edge damage at 10 and 12 o’clock. There is an old dig across the front eave into the upper storey of the bank building. The reverse has a 2 mm wide gouge on the rim at 10 o’clock, but is otherwise in about EF condition. An exceptional rarity.
This lot is part of the extensive George H. Thomson Collection.
