This is a commemorative 63mm medal issued by the Royal Numismatic Society of New Zealand to celebrate the bicentennial of the rediscovery of New Zealand by Captain James Cook in 1769. It is one of 250 bronze medals issued by the Society and was designed by the famed New Zealand designer James Berry. It was produced by the Royal Australian Mint and comes in a handsome brown leatherette 4 1/2 X 3 3/4 inch box. It is number 1969/1 for those collectors of NZ medals. The obverse has a portrait of Cook looking left and a globe of the Pacific around him and the words "JAMES COOK, CIRCUMNAVIGATOR OF THE PACIFIC. ROYAL NUMISMATIC SOCIETY OF NEW ZEALAND. 1969". The reverse has a representation of the H.M. BARK ENDEAVOUR with figures of Maoris in the foreground. Both the medal and box are in excellent condition.
