Diversified lot of 33 cheques dated 1861 to 1900 (mostly before 1880). Attractive lot, many with nice vignettes and various interesting preprinted internal revenue stamps as well as adhesive revenues. Most have been punch or cut cancelled, as usual. Of particular note is a Girard National Bank, Philadelphia, cheque of 1872 payable in gold, a reminder of the Civil War currency derangement which saw paper money, and to a lesser degree silver coin, fall to a discount relative to gold coin. - Eight old cheques: Bank of Pennsylvania, 1796! on laid paper; Bank of the United States, 1827; Girard Bank 1837, with thousands amounts printed at left and hundreds at top, severed in the appropriate places at time of issue to prevent raising; Bank of Northumberland 1853; Tanner's Bank 1853; Philadelphia Bank 1854, with vignette; Harshman & Winters Exchange Bank, Dayton, 1856; Dauphin Deposite Bank, Harrisburg, 1858, printed in green.
