Barry & Nephews, £5 Note 185_, Swellendam (South Africa). Royston & Brown, London, imprint; printed on watermarked paper. Uncirculated. These notes were prepared for use in connection with the extensive Joseph Barry and Nephews (Thomas and John) trading enterprises in Cape Colony. The firm is still in operation in Swellendam. - South African Republic (Z.A.R), £1 Sterling Note, 1900. Issued from Pretoria, 28 May 1900, when the Boer War was raging, an emergency issue. Pretoria fell shortly afterward. Printed on heavy paper, with an embossed seal at the right. Manuscript signatures J. S. Marais and N. S. Malherbe. VF-EF condition, with a hard vertical centre crease and a few other lighter folds, soiling and mounting remnant on back. An interesting and historic item. 2 Pcs.
