K. Matthews was a Sergeant in the Victoria Volunteer Rifles of Canada from the 1870’s to the 1890’s. The Victoria Rifles were originally formed in 1861 from members of the Beaver Lacrosse Club of Montreal. Renamed the Victoria Volunteer Rifles by the end of the year, It had about 300 members at the time and contained 6 companies. The soldiers were involved in action during the Fenian Raids from 1866 to 1870 and helped quell riots and other civil disturbances in the late 1870’s and 1880’s in and around Montreal.
The following group of shooting medals, all won by Matthews, is the finest group we have ever had the privilege of offering to the collector. Not only of interest to the discriminating numismatist, but of great interest to militaria collectors and collectors of the early silversmiths of Montreal.
