McLachlan-476, Breton-90. 261.3g. 76mm. Plain edge. Signed J.S. and A.B. WYON. The idea for this medal was conceived by Sir John A. Macdonald, first Prime Minister of Canada, who thought it appropriate to have a medal struck to commemorate the establishment of the Dominion of Canada. Macdonald made arrangements for J.S. and A.B. Wyon, Chief Engravers of Her Majesty’s Seal, to design and produce the medal some time before June 3, 1868. The Wyons were paid $2,000 to strike one example in gold for Queen Victoria, fifty in silver, and 500 pieces in bronze. Although these medals appear at auction a few times a year, they rank among the most sought-after medals in Canadian numismatics. McLachlan described (1886) the reverse as, “is in grouping and execution the finest piece of art appearing on any Canadian medal.”
Chocolate-brown surfaces are partially glossy. There are a couple of marks in the left obverse field, including three tiny pinscratches left of the V in VICTORIA. The reverse is essentially mark-free, with just a single minor rim bruise above GO in VIGOR. Original red leather box included. Beautiful blue velvet interior with functioning hardware.
