Lr. 1345 — Saint John New Brunswick Public Grammar School - City Corporation Prize. Undated. 22K Gold. McLachlan-414, Breton-161A. 38.2mm. 43.5g. Edge engraved EDWARD ARTHUR EVERETT. Signed J.S. & A.B. WYON. R.W. McLachlan wrote the following in Canadian Numismatics, published in 1886: “Given by the Corporation for competition among the pupils of the St. John Grammar School. Education in New Brunswick is more under the control of the government than in the other Provinces of the Dominion. Separate schools receive no government aid, citizens of all creeds having to contribute alike to the support of the public schools.” McLachlan only listed this the medal in bronze.
According to the July 18, 1945 edition of the Montreal Gazette, Edward Arthur Everett (1854-1945) was the oldest living graduate of the University of New Brunswick at the time of his death on July 17, 1945 at the age of 91. Per the obituary: “Born and brought up in St. John, N.B., Mr. Everett came to Montreal over 30 years ago. For some years he was a manufacturer’s agent representing Stuart and Foster of Toronto. He attended the First Baptist Church here.” He is buried at Mount Royal Cemetery.
Lr. 1345 is a major rarity in gold. This example, awarded to Mr. Everett in 1870, can be traced back to 1988, when it was offered as part of the Torex #6 sale by Jeffrey Hoare Auctions. It realized $1,700, a considerable amount at that time. Both sides are deep yellow-gold with dramatic prooflike contrast. The surfaces were wiped long ago, but the trivial hairlines are irrelevant and have no bearing on the rarity or appeal of this important offering. Note that XRF testing showed a purity of 24K.
