McLachlan-416, Breton-156. 41mm. 29.3g. Plain edge. Signed B. WYON. The Sunbury Grammar School was established in 1868 as one of a number of such schools in New Brunswick. Sunbury County is located just east of Fredericton. These medals are rarely offered, with examples missing from both the Suffell and Hendler collections. One was sold as part of the W.H. Hunter Collection in 1920. Another is held by Library and Archives Canada.
This medal is spectacular. Smooth golden-brown surfaces exhibit iridescent patina over the glossy fields on the obverse, with shades including ice-blue, green, violet, and magenta. The reverse is only slightly more subdued with a series of tiny marks under the S in DECUS.
From the Michael Joffre Collection of Canadian Historical Medals.
