McLachlan-176, Breton-138. Lot of three medals, all 45.5mm with plain edges. Obverse is similar to the preceding, except the congregation changed the name (and inscription) from WESTERN to CAVALRY. The architects’ names have been replaced with ERECTED 1876. The reverse references the Congregational College of British North America in Montreal, founded in 1839. 1.) Copper. 48.6g. Abundant mint-red colour remains with violet toning in the fields. Spot of verdigris within the second E in COLLEGE. 2.) White metal. 39.9g. Stone-grey and a bit rough with a large rim mark at 11 o’clock on the obverse. 3.) White metal. 37.6g. Significantly better than last with flashy prooflike fields. Small marks in the field above the church. Struck in coinage alignment, unlike the other two pieces in this lot.
From the Michael Joffre Collection of Canadian Historical Medals.
