McLachlan-484, Charlton-EDOA-3. 41.4mm. 55.6g. Honeybee and OR on edge. Signed P. TASSET. Struck at the Paris Mint between November 1860 and December 1879. Although unnamed, this outstanding Dominion of Canada Exhibition gold medal is contemporary to the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition at which it was first presented in 1876.
Gleaming surfaces are a profound shade of yellow-gold. Deeply prooflike fields contrast appreciably against lightly frosted relief elements. Wiped at some point long ago, leaving wispy hairlines on each side, but they pose little distraction. There are a few specks of aqua residue within the confines of the crown, and a small rim bump occurs below the tip of the left branch stem on the reverse. These flaws are essentially invisible to the unaided eye. XRF analysis revealed a purity of 24K.
