McLachlan-268, Charlton-EONA-9 Variety 3. 41.6mm. 36.5g. Plain edge. Maker’s name G. WARD removed from lower reverse. Reverse border engraved: “Wm. ESPLIN T’P. OF ARRAN / BURGOYNE. Central reverse inscribed: “GROUP NO. 3 / FARM COMPETITION / 1889.
This medal, which we previously offered in June 2017, comes with a remarkable research article by Judy Blackman that was published in the Ontario Numismatist. According to the article, “The farm of William Esplin located in Arran Township was proclaimed one of the most harmonious they [the judges] had visited. Good fences, well kept private roads and paddocks, a romantic sugar camp, large numbers of recently planted sugar maples and other trees, a fine pig barn, and a new sheep house — it was a showy farm the judges declared.”
This is the silver medal Esplin was awarded, still housed in its original purple velvet-line case, which survives in excellent condition. The medal itself is naturally toned in primarily blue and gold patina. A phenomenal Ontario agricultural medal.
