Breton-93, Clowery-104, Eimer-1710. 51.3mm. 104.5g. Plain edge. Signed J.S. & A.B. WYON. Design as last, but struck in gold. According to Clowery, “It would appear that the earlier gold medals had a fineness of .750. This is based on a rare invoice from Allan Wyon dated November 20th, 1894 for the Aberdeen medal which stipulates 18K.” Only 27 of these medals were ever issued in gold, and we suspect a healthy number of them have been melted over time. Others may remain hidden away in family collections and out of the reach of numismatists. Offerings like this are rare. The only other example we are aware of is the recently offered Max Brail piece.
Both sides of this substantial gold medal are profoundly lemon-gold with reddish accents and trace of friction. Reflective fields and minimally scattered abrasions contributed to the impressive eye appeal. A small mark occurs on the rim above the N in PRESENTED, and there is an inconspicuous test mark on the edge at VE in GOVERNOR. A very rare 19th century medal struck in 18K gold, per XRF analysis.
