Charlton-1595-15-1. 50mm. 19.1g. Plain edge. Signed JOHNSON (Milan, Italy). An extremely rare medal. From the Charlton reference: “Mr. Tiffin ordered a medal to be given by him to those present at his thank you reception at the Chateau de Ramezay. The reception was in appreciation for his donation of a large book collection to the Chateau to establish the first public library in Montreal. However, this piece was rejected due to the error in misspelling Ramezay as Ramsey. Mr Tiffin ordered approximately twenty pieces in total to be struck using the misspelled die.”
Examples exist in silver, bronze, white metal, and aluminum. Presumably, five of each were struck for a total of 20 pieces. This is an example in aluminum, and the first this cataloguer has seen. Gorgeous eye appeal and preservation with profound cameo contrast. A few marks in the left obverse field and a rim bump above NA serve as pedigree markers.
From the Michael Joffre Collection of Canadian Historical Medals.
