McLachlan-482, Breton-173. 57.8mm. 104.1g. Plain edge. Signed J.S. & A.B. WYON. From Canadian Numismatics (1886): “In 1872, the Prince of Wales was stricken with typhus fever, and the disease gained such strength that for long time he was not expected to recover. A national thanksgiving medal was issued the Messrs. Wyon on his recovery; and on the recommendation of Mr. Sandham, a reverse for the Canadian day of thanksgiving, which was appointed at a later time by the Dominion Government, was prepared, and this medal struck.” Glossy chocolate-brown surfaces display blue and gold accents. Small areas of verdigris on the obverse. From the Michael Joffre Collection of Canadian Historical Medals.
