Betts-Unlisted. Breton-4. 34.7mm 14.4g. Plain edge. Signed I. DOLLIN F. Similar to last, but with a different obverse. According to Forrer’s Biographical Dictionary of Medallists, Vol. 1, Dollin “was residing at Paris, circa 1680, and worked for the French Medal Mint from 1714 to 1723. He was employed to complete the series of medals of Louis XIV.” This example is undoubtedly contemporary. It is well-worn and shows evidence of a hanger having been removed at 12 o’clock. These small-sized medals should be regarded as extremely rare and of the highest historical significance, possibly or even likely issued for presentation to Indigenous allies in New France.
