Betts-Unlisted. Breton-7. 56.7mm. 74.2g. Cornucopia and BRONZE on edge. Unsigned. This is a post-1879 restrike of the Louis XIV Honus et Virtus medal. It combines the famous reverse design, which is well-known to have been issued during the reign of Louis XV to North American Indigenous chiefs, but with a portrait of the Sun King. Victor Morin posits in Les médailles décernées aux Indiensthat originals were struck circa 1714, but he doubts they were issued as peace medals. Regardless, these Louis XIV Honus et Virtus medals are rare, even as copper restrikes. John Ford had an example similar to the one offered here. It brought $632.50 in the October 2006 Stack’s sale. The rims are broad and squared-off with a thickness of 3.1mm. Lightly patinated brass-gold surfaces display prooflike fields and fully struck, unworn relief elements. A small dark encrustation occurs in the left obverse field behind the King’s portrait.
From the Michael Joffre Collection of Canadian Historical Medals.
