McLachlan-17, Breton-34. 41.2mm. 29g. Plain edge. Signed I. MAUGER. France’s King Louis XIV ordered the Kebeca Liberata medals to commemorate France’s defence of Quebec City in 1690. The examples offered are typically restrikes, identified by differences in the maker’s name, production quality, and even portrait. This is an original. Tiny rim flaws are diagnostic, including one at 3 o’clock on the obverse. The highest points of the King’s curls are sharp, as is the beaver on the other side. Glowing mint-red around the legends complements glossy brown surfaces with pale blue and violet patina over the fields. Only a couple of minute carbon spots are present.
From the Michael Joffre Collection of Canadian Historical Medals.
