McLachlan-540, Breton-179. 53mm. 58g. Plain edge. Signed J. Taylor. This medal commemorates the laying of the cornerstone of the Basilica-Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in St. John’s, Newfoundland on May 21, 1841. Examples exist in both white metal (usual) and silver. They can be found either struck or cast. This is a rare cast silver medal with as-made roughness. Gold and gunmetal patina covers each side. A very rare early Canadian medal in this composition.
From the Michael Joffre Collection of Canadian Historical Medals.
