Breton-181, Jamieson-20, Obverse of BHM-458, Eimer-1120. 48.0mm. 61.3g. Plain edge. Signed C. H. KÜCHLER. The Hudson’s Bay Company engaged in the presentation of medals to its Indigenous allies, just as the colonial governments of France and England did during the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. These particular medals are known to have been distributed in silver (extremely rare) and several varieties exist in bronzed copper, as here. Described as “Proof, nearly Choice” in its last public appearance in 2007, this specimen displays flashy chocolate-brown surfaces with accents of blue and gold throughout. The usual die break occurs at 12 o’clock on the reverse, and rim breaks appear around 8 o’clock on the obverse.
Ex: Possibly Jim King; Ted L. Craig (7/16/1970); John J. Ford, Jr.; Ford Collection, Part XVIII (Stack’s, 5/2007), lot 50, realized $2,300 USD; Warren Baker.

This is part of the Geoffrey Bell Collection.
