McLachlan-173, Breton-107. 55.5mm. 80.7g. Cornucopia and BRONZE on edge. Signed CAQUÉ. Struck at the Paris Mint after 1879. Design as last but gilded. Awarded to J. GRENIER of the Laval Normal School (LAVALLENSI NORMALI). The recipient’s name appears to have been re-engraved over a smoothed area, possibly to correct an initial mistake in the spelling. Similarly, the 9 in 1905 is hand-engraved over the 8, which was punched into the die when the medal was originally struck. Coloration is deep yellow-gold without any trace of the underlying bronze. Lightly wiped.
