McLachlan-137, Breton-174. 48mm. 43.5g. Plain edge. Signed J.S. WYON. Design as last. This piece is struck on a thick planchet (4.2mm) in white metal. Both sides are brilliant with deep cameo contrast; the reverse is particularly striking. Just a few small marks appear on the obverse.
Although the quality of this example should be enough to entice any specialist, what stands out are the original box and paper wrapper that accompany it. The green Wyon cardboard box measures 55mm by 55mm. The top shows the Prince of Wales’ feathers. The bottom reads JOSEPH S. WYON, / MEDALLIST, / AND / ENGRAVER OF SEALS, / TO / HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN, / AND / H.R.H. THE PRINCE OF WALES, / 287, REGENT STREET, / LONDON. An exceptional survivor and certain to excite even the most experienced collector.
From the Michael Joffre Collection of Canadian Historical Medals.
