McLachlan-165, Breton-120. 44.6mm. 46.4g. Plain edge. Signed J.S. & A.B. WYON. The Shakespeare medal for English literature was endowed by “the citizens of Montreal” in celebration of the Bard’s 300th anniversary. However, the medal was actually the pet project of one man: Mr. T.D. King. According to McLachlan, King “advertised a meeting for the purpose of striking a medal in honor of Shakespere’s [sic] tercentenary. Finding himself the only one present at the meeting, he constituted himself Chairman and Secretary, passed a series of resolutions, and carrying out these resolutions, soon had sufficient funds collected with which to defray the expenses connected with the founding of this medal.” This copper medal shows few marks. Chocolate-brown surfaces are partly glossy with a touch of field-device contrast. A small encrustation occurs below DOMINO on the reverse scroll.
From the Michael Joffre Collection of Canadian Historical Medals.
