Breton-56. 35.8mm. 20.7g. 3.7mm thick. Plain edge. Unsigned. According to the Canadian Antiquarian and Numismatic Journal (October 1874), the County of Welland ordered medals to celebrate the heroism of those who defended against the Fenian invasion in 1866. However, few were struck in silver. Examples were restruck at a later date in bronze and white metal, as here. Flashy and brilliant with considerable field reflectivity. Struck from lightly rusted dies. Rim marks at 12 o’clock on each side suggest a hanger may have been present at some point.
