McLachlan-273, Breton-142. 51.2mm. 71.4g. Plain edge. Signed B. WYON. An unnamed example of this popular Benjamin Wyon design with Victory holding a wreath in her right hand. Per McLachlan: "This medal was struck in 1846, and was awarded annually in gold and silver to the students making the highest stand at the closing examinations of their course. In 1862 it was discontinued on account of the cost of such a large medal… .” Captivating glossy brown surfaces showcase violet and blue hues when angled. The obverse fields are surprisingly reflective. The only flaw is a small rim nick at 12 o’clock on the obverse.
