42.3mm. 28.3g. Plain edge. Unsigned. Similar to the preceding lot, but in silver and rare as such. In 1835, when these medals were first distributed, silver examples were sold for the equivalent of about $100 USD in Dutch guilders today. Gilt bronze medals sold for half that, and bronze for less than one-third. Consequently, few silvers were purchased by collectors, and examples seldom come up for sale. Silver medals have been offered as part of the collections of Charles Ira Bushnell (1882), Gerald Hart (1888), W.H. Hunter (1920), H.D. Gibbs (1952), and John J. Ford (2004), with an unknown number of duplications included.
This is a prooflike Choice Uncirculated representative with gorgeous ice-blue and lavender patina and flashy fields. The rims are flawless, and we note nothing more than a few superficial hairlines. Included is an old collector tag documenting its purchase from Hans Schulman, the well-known 20th century coin dealer and son of Jacques Schulman, the Dutch numismatist whose firm remains in business. The purchase date is given as March 1959.
Ex: Hans Schulman (3/1959); The Dresden Collection of British and Betts Medals (Heritage, 11/2019, as MS64 NGC — NGC insert is included), lot 40032; Jacob Lipson (4/2021).
