42.1mm. 28.3g. Plain edge. Unsigned. The U.S.-Canada arbitration medal commemorates the Netherlands’ King William I’s involvement as arbiter in the New Brunswick-Maine boundary conflict of 1829-1831. The medals were designed by Professor P.O. van Der Chijs and likely struck in Germany. In 1835, when these medals were first distributed, silver examples were sold for the equivalent of about $100 USD, Gilt bronze medals sold for half that, and bronze for less than one-third. Consequently, few silvers were purchased by collectors, and examples seldom come up for sale. EF, a few scratches, Seldom offered, Scarce.1pc. From the Geoffrey Bell Collection.
